That does not mean every yard should buy electric tomorrow, but it does mean fleet managers can stop treating electric spotter trucks as a science project.
The better question is practical: does an electric yard truck fit the way your yard actually works?

A terminal tractor usually works inside a controlled site. It runs predictable moves between dock doors, drop lots, staging areas, and trailer rows. It returns to the same base. It often has natural idle windows during breaks, shift changes, dock delays, or trailer waits.
That is why electric yard trucks are getting serious attention. Their work is low-speed, high-torque, start-and-stop, and repetitive. Those are conditions where electric drivetrains can make sense.
A diesel yard truck can still be the right choice, especially when a fleet needs maximum flexibility, lower upfront cost, fast fueling, simple resale, or existing service familiarity. But for the right site, an electric spotter truck may reduce idling, improve driver comfort, quiet down the yard, and support emissions goals.
Before comparing brands or spec sheets, start with the yard itself.
Many yards say a truck runs 16 or 24 hours a day. Sometimes that is true. Often, the truck is assigned to a long shift but physically moving for fewer hours.
That difference matters. An electric terminal tractor may fit well if there are reliable windows for opportunity charging. If the truck is constantly moving with no predictable break, you need a different charging and backup plan.
Track real movement time, idle time, trailer moves per shift, peak periods, and shift-change patterns. Guessing here can get expensive.
Charging is not just a plug. You need to know where the truck parks, where the driver takes breaks, how close charging is to the normal workflow, and whether the charger creates traffic problems in the yard.
A good electric yard truck plan keeps the truck working the same job with minimal disruption. If charging requires a long reposition, blocks a dock lane, or depends on one vulnerable charger, the operation may feel the pain quickly.
This is one of the biggest questions buyers underestimate. The truck may be ready before the site is.
Before committing, talk with the utility, facilities team, charger supplier, and equipment partner. Ask about power availability, lead times, installation cost, permitting, charger count, and future expansion. A single electric spotter truck is one planning exercise. A full yard conversion is another.
Do not spec an electric yard truck only around average loads. Look at the heaviest trailers, grades, yard surface, fifth-wheel lift needs, climate, shift length, and whether the unit needs to leave the property.
A yard-only unit and a DOT-ready terminal tractor are not the same purchase. If the truck crosses public roads, moves between facilities, or needs specific road equipment, confirm those requirements before shopping.
Uptime still wins. Electric or diesel, a yard truck that cannot move trailers is a problem.
Ask who services the unit, how parts are handled, what technician training is required, and what support exists near your location. A strong truck with weak local support can become a headache. A used diesel yard truck with familiar service may be the smarter short-term move for some fleets.
Electric yard trucks are gaining ground, but they are not the automatic answer.
A used diesel spotter truck may make more sense when the budget is tighter, the site lacks charging infrastructure, the truck needs to work in multiple locations, or the fleet wants equipment quickly. CNG may be worth comparing for fleets with existing fuel infrastructure or emissions goals that do not require battery-electric equipment.
Leasing can also be smart when a fleet wants newer equipment without tying up capital. And for some yards, the right move is to keep a proven diesel or used yard dog working while planning an electric pilot more carefully.
The key is not choosing old technology or new technology. The key is matching the truck to the work.
